Your flight, with the lift you actually had.

Your vario’s IGC file holds the whole flight: altitude, climbs, glides. YouMetry lays it over your camera’s picture — vario, glide ratio, altitude — and replays the flight in 3D over the real terrain, wing included.

What YouMetry reads

  • The IGC file from any vario: it is free flight’s logbook, the same one XContest and national leagues read.
  • Barometric altitude for the vario, GPS altitude for height above sea level: the vario stays smooth, the altitude stays right.
  • The pilot, site and glider type written in the file header, shown as they are.
  • A plain GPX track also works, if your instrument writes no IGC.

Free flight’s instruments

  • Vario — climb and sink rate, −5 to +5 m/s, at the centre of the picture.
  • Glide ratio — distance covered per metre lost. It stays silent when it would mean nothing: while climbing, or too slowly to carry meaning.
  • Altitude above sea level, distance from take-off, heading and the flight’s track.
  • Take-off and landing detected from ground speed, not altitude: a paraglider often lands far below its launch.
  • No lap timer, no ghost lap: free flight is not raced in laps.

The flight replayed in 3D

The track is replayed over the real terrain, with aerial imagery streamed in high resolution along the flight: you see the thermal turn in its bowl again, the final approach, the glide over the ridge. The wing is drawn as an arc, with its lines and pilot, and it banks in the turns exactly as you did. The 3D view exports like any other shot, or sits as an overlay on the video.

How to do it

  1. Get the IGC file off your vario, just as you would to declare the flight online.
  2. Open your video in YouMetry, then drop the IGC file: the world switches to paragliding on its own.
  3. Line the gauges up with the picture using the offset — vario and camera do not share a clock.
  4. Export the burned-in video, or a transparent layer for your edit.

Good to know

  • If your file carries no barometric altitude, everything comes from the GPS: the vario is then jumpier, which is expected.
  • A vario usually writes one point per second. That is enough for the flight and the 3D view, less so for a gauge moving every frame: the track is smoothed between points.
  • Paragliding mode is on Mac and Windows. The mobile app stays car and motorcycle.

Questions

Is my vario enough, or do I need another sensor?

Your vario is enough. YouMetry asks for nothing more than the IGC file it already writes on every flight, plus your camera’s video — GoPro, Insta360, phone, whichever.

Can I try it before buying?

Yes, right in the browser, with nothing to install: pick the Paragliding world, drop your flight and your video. Export there is capped at 720p and 30 seconds; everything else is the app itself.

Is the glide ratio shown my wing’s glide ratio?

No: it is the ground glide ratio, measured on your actual path. It includes wind, air mass and your flying, which is exactly what is worth watching again. It stays silent while climbing, where it would mean nothing.
