The engine has something to say too.
Your car’s OBD-II port delivers RPM, load, pedal position, temperatures. YouMetry logs them through a small Bluetooth adapter, and lays them on the video next to speed and lap time.
What YouMetry reads
- An ELM327-type Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) OBD-II adapter, live — from the YouMetry mobile app or the desktop app’s Live mode.
- .MF4 / .MDF logs (ASAM MDF 4 format) from data loggers.
- OBD channels inside a RaceChrono export.
- RPM, speed, gear, throttle, pedal, load, coolant, oil and intake temperatures, boost pressure, airflow, lambda, timing, fuel, battery voltage, torque.
How to do it
- Plug a BLE adapter into the OBD port (under the steering wheel). Models that work: Vgate iCar Pro, OBDLink CX, Veepeak BLE+.
- Open the YouMetry app on the phone, let it find the adapter, then tap REC — or START to run the lap timer as well.
- When you stop, the app writes a session file; send it to the computer next to your camera’s video.
- In YouMetry, open the video and the file: the app’s sync flash lines the two up automatically.
What you get
- Rev counter, pedals, gear, temperature dials, boost pressure, battery voltage.
- Sound alerts in the mobile app: a sound when RPM, coolant temperature or speed crosses your threshold.
- All combined with position: OBD gives the engine, GPS gives the trajectory, YouMetry joins the two.
Good to know
- Cheap old classic Bluetooth adapters stay invisible: you need a BLE model.
- OBD-II gives no brake pressure or clutch on most cars: the brake shown is estimated from deceleration, and the app says so.
- The number of channels and their rate depend on the car: the more you request, the slower each one gets.
Questions
Which OBD adapter should I choose?
A Bluetooth LE (BLE) adapter: Vgate iCar Pro, OBDLink CX or Veepeak BLE+. Classic Bluetooth models are not detected.
Does it work on a motorcycle?
Only if it has an OBD-II compatible diagnostic port, which is still rare. On a motorcycle, YouMetry relies instead on GPS and on the lean angle measured by the phone or camera.
