The trackside desk, in your pocket.

On the phone, YouMetry does not edit video: it records what the camera cannot see. Position, speed, engine data, lap times, lean angle — in a file the desktop app opens as it is, in sync with your video.

What it does

  • Records with the screen off, phone in your pocket or on its mount: a notification says so, with a Stop button. An interrupted session — battery, app closed — is recovered at next launch.
  • Lap timer with three big buttons — Start, Lap, Finish — written into the file.
  • OBD-II over Bluetooth: RPM, throttle, temperatures, with a BLE adapter (see the OBD-II page).
  • Sound alerts: a sound when speed, RPM or a temperature crosses your threshold — four sounds to choose from, set for the gauges on display.
  • Lean angle on a motorcycle, measured by the phone’s sensors.
  • GoPro remote: REC starts the camera along with the data.
  • YouTube live with the gauges overlaid on the picture from the phone’s camera or a USB camera.

In the car: Android Auto

  • YouMetry shows on the car’s screen: a large lap timer, two gauges, the lap number.
  • Two buttons, no more: Start and Record, then Lap and Finish once the timer is running.
  • Recording starts from the car, even with the app closed on the phone.
  • The car screen shows a status, not an animated dashboard: that is Android Auto’s rule, and also what is reasonable to look at while driving.

How to use it

  1. Install the app from Google Play or the Download page.
  2. In the paddock: pick Car or Motorcycle, tick your gauges, pair the OBD adapter and the GoPro if you have them.
  3. Tap Sync and film the screen for a second: that flash will line data and video up automatically.
  4. Drive. When you stop, share the file to your computer and open it with the video in YouMetry.

Good to know

  • Android 8 or later. The iPhone version is in preparation, with CarPlay.
  • A phone’s GPS gives roughly one fix per second: enough for speed and track; for hundredth-of-a-second lap times, an external receiver does better.
  • Nothing is sent anywhere: the file stays on the phone until you share it.

Questions

Is the app paid?

No, the mobile app is free. It is the desktop application that a licence unlocks, for unlimited export.

Do I have to keep the screen on during the session?

No. Recording carries on with the screen off, and a permanent notification lets you stop it.

Can I use the app without the desktop application?

Yes, as a lap timer, an OBD dashboard and for YouTube live. To put the data on a recorded video, you need the desktop application.
