VIRB Edit is abandoned. The idea was still a good one.

Garmin VIRB Edit laid G-Metrix data over videos from VIRB cameras. The cameras are no longer sold, the software stopped at version 5.4.3, and the Google Maps key it shipped with has expired: many users now get nothing but a JavaScript error. YouMetry does the same with any camera — and with the GPX track from your Garmin watch.

Where Garmin VIRB Edit stands

  • Free, but abandoned by Garmin along with the VIRB cameras: no updates since version 5.4.3.
  • The Google Maps API key built into the software has expired. Users get a JavaScript error and the application no longer works; the “VIRB Edit JavaScript Error” thread on forums.garmin.com records it.
  • Users report being unable to export at all — a project opens, and nothing comes out.

If you came for the transparent PNG sequence

  • VIRB Edit had an “Export transparent PNG sequence for overlays” checkbox: that was how you laid the gauges over other footage in an editing application. YouMetry has the same output — a PNG sequence with a transparent background.
  • Plus a second format for the same purpose: a single ProRes 4444 file with an alpha channel, which drops onto a track in Final Cut, DaVinci Resolve or Premiere without handling thousands of still images.
  • Preview and export go through the same renderer: what you place on screen is what comes out of the layer.

The vario gauge that was asked for and never shipped

  • A paraglider pilot asked Garmin for a vario gauge — the rate-of-climb indicator — in VIRB Edit. It never arrived.
  • YouMetry has the vario and the glide ratio (ground speed over sink rate), with altitude shown relative to take-off or absolute, as you prefer.
  • It reads the IGC files from your vario or flight app, not only GPX, and replays the flight in 3D with the wing. The details are on the Paragliding page.

Switching to YouMetry

  1. Try it with nothing to install: the online trial takes a video with its DJI SRT or a GPX.
  2. Download YouMetry for Mac or Windows: everything is open, only export is limited to 5 clips of 30 seconds at 720p, for 10 days.
  3. Export your Garmin watch or bike-computer activity as GPX from Garmin Connect, give it the video’s name, and open both in YouMetry.
  4. Pick a layout, drag the gauges into place, export.

Questions

Does YouMetry read Garmin .FIT files?

Not directly: export the activity as GPX from Garmin Connect. The GPX carries position, elevation and time; YouMetry computes speed from it.

VIRB Edit shows a JavaScript error: can it still be used?

The error comes from the Google Maps API key built into the software, which has expired; Garmin no longer updates VIRB Edit, so no fix is coming. Users report being unable to export at all. Your files are untouched: export the activity as GPX from Garmin Connect and open it with the video in YouMetry.

Is there a vario gauge, as for paragliding?

Yes: vario and glide ratio, with altitude relative to take-off or absolute. YouMetry reads IGC files from varios and flight apps in addition to GPX, and replays the flight in 3D with the wing. See the Paragliding page.

How much does YouMetry cost?
