Your GoPro’s data is already inside the video.
A GoPro with GPS records its position and speed in a hidden track of the MP4 file. YouMetry opens it directly: drop the video in and the gauges appear, in sync with the picture.
What YouMetry reads
- The MP4’s GPMF telemetry track: position, altitude, 2D and 3D speed.
- Both generations of the format: GPS5, and GPS9 introduced with the HERO11, which also reports fix quality — points without reception are discarded.
- Videos split into chapters by the camera.
How to do it
- Turn on GPS in the camera preferences, and give it a minute outdoors to lock onto satellites before you set off.
- Copy the original MP4 — not a version recompressed by a messaging app or a social network, which would have lost the data track.
- Open it in YouMetry: video and telemetry come in together.
- Pick the Car, Motorcycle or Drone profile: the gauges on offer change with the vehicle.
What you get
- Speedometer, G-forces, course map, altitude, lap timer.
- On track: laps detected automatically, sectors, best lap, and a corner-by-corner table (minimum speed, braking point, lateral G).
- The route replayed in 3D over terrain, with a car or motorcycle model of your choice.
Good to know
- Not every GoPro has GPS: check your model. Without GPS there is neither position nor speed in the file — in that case add a GPX track from your phone or watch.
- The YouMetry mobile app can trigger the GoPro over Bluetooth as it starts recording data.
- For engine data, combine the GoPro video with an OBD-II or RaceChrono file.
Questions
How do I show speed on a GoPro video?
Film with GPS on, then open the original MP4 in YouMetry: speed is read from the file and shown as a dial on the picture.
Do I first need to extract the data with another tool?
No. YouMetry reads the telemetry track straight from the MP4.
My video opens with no position gauges: why?
Either GPS was off or had no reception yet, or the file was recompressed and lost its data track. Start again from the file on the memory card.
